Fellows' Update

Daniel Wong, MDDaniel Wong, MD
Endocrinologist
Sutter Medical Group

"My fellowship had a focus on the thyroid and as a result I became very interested in it. Also, Dr. Mazzaferri would occasionally give us lectures as he lived in the same city and it sparked my interest further.

I went to the ATA Fellows Conference and received lectures from some of the best minds in thyroid. Afterwards, I interacted with them in an informal environment and really liked the camaraderie between members."

Mark Versnick, MD, MPHMark Versnick, MD, MPH
Endocrine Surgeon
Coastal Surgery Specialists

"I am interested in the surgical management of benign and malignant thyroid disease. Endocrine surgery provides many opportunities for surgical cure, of which thyroid surgery is the most common. I gain great satisfaction from removing a functional or malignant gland and relieving patients of their disease indefinitely.

My membership in the ATA is a desire to belong to the leading organization on thyroid disease. I value the ongoing relationship between endocrinologists and surgeons. I also value the ATA in its leadership in guideline development and anticipate this to continue."

"Having experienced ATA membership as a fellow, I seek to continue membership to further personal development and the development of current and future endocrinologists to aid in the care of patients with thyroid disorders. I also would like to continue the camaraderie and interpersonal relationships established by my predecessors."

"As a pediatric endocrinologist, I have a focused clinical and research interest in pediatric thyroid disease, including thyroid neoplasia. I am engaged in both basic and clinical research in thyroid physiology, as well as the clinical care of children with thyroid disease.

Having attended 2 annual meetings of the ATA as a fellow and junior faculty, I have been very impressed with the organization as both a scientific and professional society. As such, I look forward to continue participating in the ATA as I continue my professional development."

"The American Thyroid Association membership is very important to me, as my main area of interest is endocrine head and neck surgery. I rely heavily on the ATA guidelines as I counsel my patients. Taking care of the patient with thyroid cancer and other thyroid disease requires a team effort between endocrinologist, pathologists, and surgeons, and being part of the ATA is a big part of bringing that team together to provide the best care to our patients."

I finished my fellowship training on June 2012. Since my fellowship, I have been interested to understand the relationship between thyroid cancer and autoimmune thyroid disease. To pursue clinical research and to improve my strengths as a clinician, clinical researcher, and a teacher I joined Endocrine team at UT Health science center at San Antonio on July 2012 as assistant professor.

have been ATA member since 2010. ATA has provided me the opportunity to interact with colleagues and leaders in the field of thyroid cancer. I loved ATA trainee day as a fellow and I have received wonderful training in thyroid related issues in the last two years by attending ATA meeting. ATA guidelines are the foundation for my clinical practice.

"As a new community endocrinologist a significant portion of my practice involves thyroid disorders. Without a doubt, the ATA has proven to be an invaluable resource to me in my day-to-day practice, I rely on the ATA for the latest developments in the practice of thyroidology. Furthermore, I appreciate the advocacy role that the ATA plays for both patients and clinicians alike. For these reasons I value my membership with the ATA and look forward to being a member for many years to come."

David S. Sharlin, PhDDavid S. Sharlin, PhD
Assistant Professor

"My laboratory will conduct basic research on thyroid hormone action during development with a particular focus on the nervous and auditory systems. The overall goal is to better understand at the molecular level cognitive and hearing deficits associated with a thyroid hormone insufficiency during development.

I was an ATA fellow for the past 5 years while a postdoctoral researcher at National Institutes of Health. The ATA provides an opportunity to remain up to date with the thyroid field and thus transitioning from a fellow to a member was a natural move. Furthermore, in my new position, I plan to remain an active contributor to our society."

"The ATA fosters the development of skills in diagnostic ultrasound, nuclear thyroidology and thyroid cytopathology. More than 50% of my patients have thyroid disorders and I look at the ATA as my primary source of information to promote excellence in my practice and the best outcomes for my patients."
