Recently Published Thyroid Research

This Thyroid Digest describing published research studies were prepared by Robert D. Utiger, M.D. from summaries of original research articles. The summaries were published in Clinical Thyroidology (Vol. 14, No. 1, 2002), a publication of the American Thyroid Association. Dr. Utiger is the Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Thyroidology.

Hyperthyroidism

  1. Atrial fibrillation is common in patients with subclinical hyperthyroidism
  2. Recurrence of cardiac rhythm abnormalities in patients with hyperthyroidism caused by amiodarone
  3. Lithium therapy can cause thyroiditis and hyperthyroidism
  4. No overall increase in major malformations in infants of mothers treated with methimazole during pregnancy
  5. Thyrotropin-receptor antibodies in patients with hyperthyroidism caused by Graves' disease inhibit thyrotropin secretion
  6. Serum from cats with hyperthyroidism does not activate feline thyrotropin receptors

Hypothyroidism

  1. Thyroxine therapy does not improve well-being or cognitive function in patients with symptoms of hypothyroidism but normal thyroid function
  2. Radiation therapy can cause hypothyroidism in patients with head and neck cancer
  3. Central hypothyroidism is common in patients with hypopituitarism

Congenital Hypothyroidism

  1. School achievement is reduced in children with congenital hyperthyroidism if it is severe and treatment is inadequate
  2. Severe hypothyroidism and slow onset of adequate treatment are associated with learning and memory deficits in children with congenital hypothyroidism

Nodular Goiter

  1. Physicians evaluate and treat patients with nontoxic multinodular goiter in widely different ways

Thyroid Cancer

  1. Fine-needle aspiration biopsies of thyroid nodules that are "nondiagnostic" do not exclude thyroid carcinoma
  2. Thirty percent of patients with a thyroid nodule that is a follicular tumor on biopsy prove to have thyroid carcinoma
  3. Anaplastic cancer of the thyroid: a summary of 50 years' experience at a single institution

Autoimmune Thyroid Disease

  1. The frequency of celiac disease is increased slightly in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis

Goiter

  1. Thyroid growth and function are increased in mice in which the growth-promoting substance, insulin-like growth factor-I, and its receptor are expressed in thyroid tissue

Postpartum Thyroid Disease

  1. Postpartum thyroid disease is not associated with postpartum depression

Nonthyroidal Illness

  1. Combining triiodothyronine with an antidepressant drug results in more rapid improvement in patients with depression

Thyroid Hormone Action

  1. Thyroid hormone stimulates bone growth by increasing the action of insulin-like growth factor-I
