Recently Published Thyroid Research

This Thyroid Digest describing published research studies were prepared by Robert D. Utiger, M.D. from summaries of original research articles. The summaries were published in Clinical Thyroidology (Vol. 14, No. 3, 2002), a publication of the American Thyroid Association. Dr. Utiger is the Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Thyroidology.

Hyperthyroidism

  1. Hyperthyroidism from the dietary supplement tiratricol (3,5,3 -triiodothyroacetic acid)
  2. Serum thyroid hormone values and counts of blood eosinophils and monocytes distinguish between Graves' disease and thyroiditis

Graves' Disease

  1. Concordance of Graves' disease is greater in monozygotic than dizygotic twins
  2. Separation of the receptor for thyrotropin from thyroid cells may be important in Graves' hyperthyroidism
  3. Only mothers with severe Graves' disease give birth to infants with hyperthyroidism

Graves’ Ophthalmopathy

  1. Long-term impairment in vision and quality of life in patients with Graves' eye disease

Hypothyroidism

  1. Some patients with subclinical hypothyroidism have mutations in the gene for the thyrotropin receptor
  2. The severity of hypothyroidism is most likely to increase in patients with high serum thyrotropin values
  3. Patients with hypothyroidism may have high serum concentrations of several enzymes
  4. Thyroxine inhibits thyrotropin secretion in patients with pituitary disease

Nodular Goiter

  1. Thyroxine therapy does not reduce the size of benign solitary thyroid nodules

Thyroid Cancer

  1. Completion thyroidectomy can be done safely after thyroid lobectomy in patients with thyroid carcinoma
  2. More extensive surgery and radioiodine therapy have had limited benefit in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma
  3. Radioiodine therapy does not impair fertility in men with thyroid carcinoma
  4. High serum antithyroglobulin concentrations after initial therapy predict recurrence in patients with thyroid carcinoma

Thyroid Function in Pregnancy

  1. Women with hyperemesis gravidarum may have transient hyperthyroidism

Congenital Hypothyroidism

  1. Monozygotic twins are rarely concordant for congenital hypothyroidism

NonThyroidal Illness

  1. Recipients of bone marrow transplants may have abnormalities of thyroid and other endocrine function
  2. 3,5-Diiodothyropropionic acid improves cardiac function in patients with heart failure

Iodine Metabolism

  1. Recurrence of mild iodine deficiency in Tasmania
