Recently Published Thyroid Research

This Thyroid Digest describing published research studies were prepared by Robert D. Utiger, M.D. from summaries of original research articles. The summaries were published in Clinical Thyroidology (Vol. 15, No. 1, 2003), a publication of the American Thyroid Association. Dr. Utiger is the Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Thyroidology.

 

Thyroid Disease

  1. Breast cancer is not increased in women with most thyroid disorders
  2. Low frequency of thyroid dysfunction in infertile women

Hyperthyroidism

  1. Secretion of ghrelin, which stimulates appetite, is decreased in hyperthyroidism
  2. Polycystic ovaries in women with hyperthyroidism
  3. Thyroxine therapy does not alter outcome in patients with hyperthyroidism due to Graves' disease

Hypothyroidism

  1. Children with brain tumors may have hypothyroidism and other endocrine problems after treatment
  2. Hyperprolactinemia is rare and of minor clinical importance in patients with hypothyroidism
  3. Adequately treated patients with hypothyroidism feel less well than other patients
  4. Higher mortality after coronary-artery surgery in women treated with thyroxine than other women

Congenital Hypothyroidism

  1. Mutations in Pendred's syndrome result in abnormal localization of the gene product in thyroid cells

Nodular Goiter

  1. Laser coagulation therapy for patients with benign solitary thyroid nodules
  2. Thyroid nodules enlarge with time (I)
  3. Thyroid nodules enlarge with time (II)

Thyroid Cancer

  1. Radioiodine can substitute for surgery to complete thyroidectomy in patients with thyroid cancer
  2. Serum thyrotropin concentrations rise soon after thyroxine therapy is stopped in patients with thyroid cancer
  3. Ultrasonography is the most sensitive test for detection of recurrent thyroid cancer in the neck

Thyroid Surgery

  1. Prevention of post-thyroidectomy hypocalcemia by calcium and vitamin D therapy

Autoimmune Thyroid Disease

  1. Autoimmune thyroid disease is common in patients with pulmonary hypertension
  2. Production of mouse antibodies that act like the thyroid-stimulating antibodies of Graves' disease
