Recently Published Thyroid Research

This Thyroid Digest describing published research studies were prepared by Robert D. Utiger, M.D. from summaries of original research articles. The summaries were published in Clinical Thyroidology (Vol. 15, issue 3, 2003) a publication of the American Thyroid Association. Dr. Utiger is the Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Thyroidology.

Hyperthyroidism

  1. Multinodular goiter is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism in older people
  2. Ground beef patties can cause hyperthyroidism
  3. Prolonged low-dose antithyroid drug therapy results in a high remission rate in Graves' hyperthyroidism
  4. Thyrotropin-like antibodies may inhibit thyrotropin secretion
  5. Thyroid dysfunction in fetuses of mothers with Graves’ disease can be detected by sampling umbilical cord blood

Graves' Ophthalmopathy

  1. Destruction of the thyroid gland can ameliorate eye problems in patients with Graves' disease

Hypothyroidism

  1. Hypothyroidism may be increased in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection
  2. The success rate of in vitro fertilization of oocytes is reduced in women with high serum thyrotropin values

Thyroid Disease

  1. Musculoskeletal disorders are uncommon in patients with thyroid dysfunction

Thyroid Hormone Therapy

  1. Raloxifene decreased the intestinal absorption of thyroxine in a patient with hypothyroidism

Nodular Goiter

  1. Low radioiodine doses reduce the size of multinodular goiters when iodine uptake is stimulated by thyrotropin

Thyroid Cancer

  1. Positron emission tomography occasionally reveals incidental thyroid nodules
  2. Different serum thyroglobulin assays may give discordant results in patients with thyroid carcinoma
  3. Cervical lymph node spread and high calcitonin secretion predict recurrence of medullary thyroid carcinoma

Thyroid Autoimmunity

  1. Some patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis have persistent thyroid pain that is relieved by thyroidectomy
  2. Many relatives of patients with autoimmune thyroid disease have positive test results for thyroid autoimmunity
  3. Thyroid ablation leads to disappearance of antithyroid antibodies in patients with thyroid cancer

Thyroid Function in Pregnancy

  1. Neurodevelopment may be delayed in infants of mothers with low serum free thyroxine values in early pregnancy

Thyroid Diagnosis

  1. Few patients have a high serum free thyroxine and a normal or high serum thyrotropin concentration

Nonthyroidal Illness

  1. Critical illness alters the activity of enzymes that metabolize thyroid hormones
