Recently Published Thyroid Research

This Thyroid Digest describing published research studies were prepared by Robert D. Utiger, M.D., from summaries of original research articles. The summaries were published in Clinical Thyroidology (Vol. 16, No. 2, 2004), a publication of the American Thyroid Association. Dr. Utiger is the Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Thyroidology.

Thyroid Disease

  1. Quality of life is reduced in patients with thyroid dysfunction and goiter

Hyperthyroidism

  1. Responses to triiodothyronine are similar in normal mice and in mice lacking receptors for sympathetic-nervous-system hormones
  2. Several clinical findings predict the outcome of hyperthyroidism caused by Graves’ disease
  3. High serum thyrotropin-receptor antibody levels predict recurrent hyperthyroidism in patients with Graves’ disease
  4. Antithyroid drug therapy may be associated with antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies in patients with hyperthyroidism due to Graves’ disease

Graves' Ophthalmopathy

  1. Proliferation of fatty tissue behind the eyes is increased in patients with Graves’ ophthalmopathy

Hypothyroidism

  1. The thickness of the carotid arteries is increased in subclinical hypothyroidism
  2. Severe mental impairment and poor physiologic status predict mortality in patients with myxedema coma
  3. Thyroxine plus triiodothyronine and thyroxine alone have similar effects in patients with hypothyroidism
  4. Serum triiodothyronine concentrations change less after sustained-release triiodothyronine than standard triiodothyronine

Nodular Goiter

  1. Thyroxine therapy has little effect on thyroid nodules in postmenopausal women

Thyroid Cancer

  1. Low and moderate doses of radioiodine are equally effective for ablation of thyroid remnants in patients with thyroid carcinoma
  2. Prognosis is good in patients with an incidentally detected medullary thyroid carcinoma
  3. Patients with poorly differentiated thyroid carcinoma have a poorer prognosis than those with well-differentiated carcinomas
  4. Somatostatin scans can detect recurrent or metastatic tumor in patients with thyroid carcinoma

Autoimmune Thyroid Disease

  1. Some patients with chronic urticaria have autoimmune thyroid disease
  2. Many women with the polycystic ovary syndrome have high serum antithyroid antibody concentrations
  3. Thyroid echogenicity is diminished in Hashimoto’s thyroiditis

Drug Effects on Thyroid Function

  1. An increase in warfarin sensitivity may herald the onset of hyperthyroidism in patients taking amiodarone

Thyroid Hormone Secretion

  1. Genetic factors are more important than environmental factors in determining pituitary–thyroid function in normal subjects
