Recently Published Thyroid Research

This Thyroid Digest describing published research studies were prepared by Robert D. Utiger, M.D., from summaries of original research articles. The summaries were published in Clinical Thyroidology (Vol. 18, No. 3, 2006), a publication of the American Thyroid Association. Dr. Utiger is the Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Thyroidology.

Thyroid Disease

  1. Small abnormalities in thyroid function are not associated with anxiety, depression, or cognitive dysfunction
  2. Mild hypertension is a feature of subclinical hyperthyroidism but not subclinical hypothyroidism

Hyperthyroidism

  1. Triiodothyronine production by the thyroid is increased in patients with hyperthyroidism
  2. Activation of airport radiation sensors after radioactive iodine treatment in hyperthyroidism
  3. Reducing iodine intake does not alter the efficacy of methimazole

Graves' Ophthalmopathy

  1. Increase in protrusion of the eyes in patients treated with pioglitazone
  2. Measurements of serum thyrotropin-receptor antibodies may predict the severity of Graves’ eye disease

Hypothyroidism

  1. Patients with subclinical hypothyroidism may have an increased risk of coronary heart disease
  2. Hypothyroidism in patients with adrenal insufficiency may disappear with adrenal hormone therapy
  3. Small changes in thyroxine dose do not alter symptoms or well-being in patients with hypothyroidism
  4. Therapy with thyroxine and triiodothyronine is not more effective than thyroxine alone in patients with hypothyroidism
  5. Administration of thyroxine into the amniotic fluid is effective therapy for goiter and hypothyroidism in fetuses

Nodular Goiter

  1. Benign and malignant thyroid nodules cannot be distinguished by ultrasonography

Thyroid Cancer

  1. Patients with multiple thyroid nodules are as likely to have a thyroid carcinoma as are patients with a solitary nodule
  2. The follicular-variant subtype of papillary thyroid cancer may be subdivided into subtypes with different characteristics
  3. Radioiodine therapy can cause abnormal testicular function in men with thyroid cancer

Autoimmune Thyroid Disease

  1. Thyroiditis occurs in 5 to 10 percent of postpartum women

Thyroid Function in Pregnancy

  1. Treatment with thyroxine reduces the rates of miscarriage and preterm delivery in pregnant women with autoimmune thyroid disease

Thyroid Diagnosis

  1. Serum thyroglobulin concentrations increase after biopsy of a thyroid nodule

Thyroid Hormone Action

  1. Triiodothyronine has rapid vasodilatory and neuroprotective actions
