Recently Published Thyroid Research

This Thyroid Digest describing published research studies were prepared by Robert D. Utiger, M.D., from summaries of original research articles. The summaries were published in Clinical Thyroidology (Vol. 19, No. 1, 2007), a publication of the American Thyroid Association. Dr. Utiger is the Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Thyroidology.

Thyroid Disease

  1. Subclinical hyperthyroidism is associated with socioeconomic deprivation in elderly subjects

Hyperthyroidism

  1. Cardiovascular abnormalities improve with treatment in patients with hyperthyroidism

Graves' Disease

  1. Serum thyrotropin-receptor and antithyroid peroxidase antibodies change differently during treatment of patients with hyperthyroidism caused by Graves’ disease

Hypothyroidism

  1. Hypothyroidism is more frequent after thyroid inflammation induced by amiodarone than after painful subacute thyroiditis
  2. The antitumor drug sunitinib can cause hypothyroidism
  3. Growth hormone therapy can cause central hypothyroidism in patients with hypopituitarism
  4. Hypertension and low serum potassium caused by excess salt-retaining hormone activity in hypothyroidism
  5. Serum insulin-like growth factor I increases in response to thyroxine in patients with hypothyroidism
  6. The effect of thyroxine is greater when taken at bedtime than in the morning in patients with hypothyroidism

Nodular Goiter

  1. Higher serum thyrotropin concentrations are a risk factor for thyroid cancer in patients with thyroid nodules
  2. Ultrasonography of the neck may reveal thyroid nodules including cancers in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism

Thyroid Cancer

  1. Age, extent of disease, and extent of treatment predict survival in patients with medullary thyroid cancer
  2. The presence of atypical cells in aspirates of follicular tumors suggests the presence of cancer
  3. There are no clinical or pathologic findings that predict the presence of cancer in the opposite thyroid lobe in patients with papillary thyroid cancer
  4. Undetectable serum thyroglobulin concentrations are strong evidence against recurrent thyroid cancer

Autoimmune Thyroid Disease

  1. The course of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis in children is variable
  2. Radioiodine decreases thyroid enlargement in patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis

Thyroid Function in Preganancy

  1. Targeted screening for thyroid dysfunction during misses many women with thyroid dysfunction

Drug Effects on Thyroid Function

  1. Bexarotene, a retinoic acid acid-like substance, inhibits thyrotropin secretion in normal subjects

Nonthyroidal Illness

  1. Increasing thyroid dysfunction is associated with more serious illness and mortality in intensive-care-unit patients
