ATA THANC Research Grants – Deadline: January 31, 2008

Call for Proposals: American Thyroid Association THANC Research Grants
The American Thyroid Association (ATA) is pleased to announce the availability of funds provided by the Thyroid Head and Neck Cancer Foundation (THANC) to support research projects in the area of thyroid head and neck surgery and thyroid cancer. Research awards are intended to assist new investigators to obtain preliminary data for submission of a more substantial application (to the NIH, for example). Research grants, up to $25,000 annually for junior investigators and up to $50,000 for senior investigators, will be awarded for two year terms, based on receipt and review of a satisfactory progress report from funded investigators in the fourth quarter of the first year of funding.

Eligibility of Junior and Senior Investigator Applicant and Use of Funds Guidelines:

  1. Junior investigators are individuals who are less than 6 years from completion of their post-doctoral fellowship and have never been a PI on an NIH RO1 or equivalent grant (recipients of NIH R29, R21 and KO8 awards are eligible). Senior investigators are those not eligible for Junior per this criterion.
  2. Faculty members (M.D. and Ph.D.) are eligible.
  3. Junior Investigators who are Postdoctoral fellows are eligible if their department provides written confirmation that at the time of the award the applicant will have a junior faculty position. Students working towards a Ph.D. are not eligible.
  4. Senior and junior investigators who have previously received ATA, ThyCa or THANC awards are not eligible.
  5. Junior investigators who have achieved the rank of Associate Professor or higher are not eligible.
  6. Applications are limited to one per individual researcher.
  7. The funds can be used for direct costs associated with the proposal, including technician’s salary, supplies or equipment, but not for PI’s salary.
  8. Recipients of ATA grants should be ATA members, or must apply to become ATA members. For new members, membership dues for the current year will be waived.
  9. Attendance at THANC scientific retreat (April) required of grantee.

Eligibility of Senior Investigator Applicant: In general, senior investigators are individuals who, because of seniority are not eligible for Junior Investigator grants. The goal of a Senior Award is to serve as bridge funding. As such, senior investigators who are PIs on a current NIH R01-type or Program Project grant, or who have current total extramural funding in excess of $200K/yr for 2 or more years, are not eligible to apply.

Proposal Requirements: By January 31, 2008, interested investigators should submit a brief description of the proposed research. Each proposal must include:

  1. Name and affiliation of applicant
  2. Title of proposed study
  3. Proposal (no longer than 900 words or three double-spaced pages in 12 point type): Note that the space requirements are absolute and nonconformance will preclude review.
    • Background to the project
    • Hypothesis and/or outline of proposed studies
    • Outline of methodology
    • Anticipated results and implications
    • A short statement of how the grant will aid the applicant
    • References (selected)
  4. An NIH-style CV (no longer than two pages) including evidence that the applicant is a New Investigator (see above), namely date of completion of postdoctoral training and current grant support (if any). In the case of postdoctoral fellows, written confirmation from the department chair must be provided that the applicant will had a junior faculty position at the time of the award. Note: Without a suitable CV, applications will not be considered

Electronic Submission: Proposals should be submitted electronically through the Research Grant Application feature on the ATA site, www.thyroid.org. A hard copy should be sent priority overnight to: American Thyroid Association, 6066 Leesburg Pike, Suite 550, Falls Church, VA 22041.

Grant Review: The ATA Research Committee will rank proposals according to their scientific merit. Authors of selected proposals will be notified by early March and invited to submit complete grant applications.
