Sheue-yann Cheng, PhD, Honored with American Thyroid Association’s
2006 Distinguished Service Award

(PHOENIX)— Sheue-yann Cheng, PhD, of Bethesda, Md., is the recipient of the American Thyroid Association’s (ATA) 2006 Distinguished Service Award, which honors important and continuing contributions to the organization. The award was presented on Oct. 14, 2006, during the ATA 77th Annual Meeting in Phoenix.

Currently Dr. Cheng is the Chief of the Gene Regulation Section in the Laboratory of Molecular Biology at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and an advisor for Howard Hughes Medical Institute–National Institutes of Health (NIH) Research Scholars.

Dr. Cheng received her PhD from the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center. She received her postdoctoral training with Dr. Elwood Jensen at the Ben May Laboratory for Cancer Research, University of Chicago, and with Drs. Hans Cahmann and Jacob Robbins at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).

After working as a postdoctoral fellow at the NIDDK, Dr. Cheng joined the Laboratory of Molecular Biology at the NCI as a senior investigator in 1979 and was appointed chief of the Gene Regulation Section in 1991. Her recent work focuses on creating mouse models for human disease, including thyroid follicular carcinoma, resistance to thyroid hormone, pituitary tumors, and dwarfism. They provide a platform for translation of basic research to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease.

For her work, Dr. Cheng has received numerous awards, including the ATA’s prestigious Sidney H. Ingbar Distinguished Lectureship Award and The Endocrine Society’s Abbott Thyroid Research Clinical Fellowship Mentor Award. She is also a recipient of the NIH Merit Award for outstanding achievements and the Scientific Achievement Award from the Chinese Medical and Health Association.
