Geraldo Medeiros-Neto, MD, PhD, Receives American Thyroid Association’s
2006 Sidney H. Ingbar Distinguished Lectureship Award

(PHOENIX)— Geraldo Medeiros-Neto, MD, PhD, of São Paulo, Brazil, is the recipient of the American Thyroid Association’s (ATA) 2006 Sidney H. Ingbar Distinguished Lectureship. Dr. Medeiros-Neto presented his lecture, “Defective Synthesis and Secretion of Thyroglobulin: From Phenotype to Genotype,” on Oct. 13, 2006, at the ATA 77th Annual Meeting in Phoenix.

The Ingbar award recognizes outstanding academic achievements in thyroidology, in keeping with the innovation and vision that epitomized Dr. Ingbar’s brilliant investigative career. The Inbar award is conferred upon an established investigator who has made major contributions to thyroid-related research over many years. The award is endowed by donations made in memory of Dr. Ingbar and is supported, in part, by an unrestricted educational grant from Abbott Laboratories.

After graduating from the University of São Paulo Medical School, Dr. Medeiros-Neto, began a four-year residency program in internal medicine and endocrinology at the Hospital das Clinicas. During his tenure, he was quickly promoted to assistant professor. Later, he completed a two-year Clinical Research Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital – Harvard Medical School, under the guidance of John B. Stanbury. In 1966, he received his doctorate in endocrinology and, seven years later, Dr. Medeiros-Neto was appointed professor of medicine at the University of São Paulo Medical School. Since then, he has trained and mentored 35 post-doctoral fellows and published more than 253 papers in peer-reviewed journals and authored and edited 14 medical books.

Dr. Medeiros-Neto is also on the editorial boards of several national and international medical journals and is a member of the Executive Committee of the International Council for Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders. His major research interests include the molecular pathogenesis of inherited disorders of the thyroid system, iodide deficiency disorders and their prevention, and clinical investigation of thyroid disease.

He is also the founder of the Latin American Thyroid Society (LATS) and served as its first president. In addition, he was elected to the Academia de Medicina in São Paulo and is an honorary member of the Academia de Medicina in Santiago, Chile. He has received many awards for his work, including the International LATS award in 1980 and the ATA’s Paul Starr Award in 1996.
