Richard Kloos, MD, Elected as Secretary-elect of the
American Thyroid Association

(PHOENIX)—Richard Kloos, MD, of Columbus, Ohio, was elected by the membership of the American Thyroid Association (ATA) as Secretary-elect of the ATA’s Board of Directors for 2006–2007. He will then serve a four-year term as ATA Secretary/Chief Operating Officer from 2007–2011.

Dr. Kloos is Associate Professor for the Divisions of Endocrinology and Metabolism and Nuclear Medicine at The Ohio State University (OSU) and the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital in Columbus. He is Co-Director of The OSU Thyroid Cancer Unit.

An active member of the ATA, he has served on the ATA Guidelines Task Force for thyroid nodules and differentiated thyroid cancer since 2004, the Clinical Affairs Committee since 2005, and as chair of the ATA Guidelines Task Force for medullary thyroid cancer since 2006.

Dr. Kloos has been a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines committee for thyroid carcinoma since 1998; is a reviewer for multiple journals including the ATA journal, Thyroid; and is a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

A graduate of the University of Chicago with honors, Dr. Kloos received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine training at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, with emphasis in international health. His postdoctoral training continued at the University of Michigan in the Divisions of Endocrinology and Metabolism and Nuclear Medicine.

"Through the ATA’s growth and leadership in research, patient care, advocacy, and education," said Dr. Kloos, "the ATA can influence the well-being of countless people through both broad population health care initiatives, fundamental research, as well as through individual personal interactions — one patient at a time."

The American Thyroid Association is a nonprofit professional medical society composed of physicians and scientists dedicated to enhancing the understanding of thyroid physiology and pathophysiology, improving diagnosis and treatment of thyroid diseases, and promoting the education of physicians, patients, and the public about thyroid disorders. The ATA’s web site, www.thyroid.org, provides professional and patient resources, such as treatment guidelines, thyroid health brochures in English and Spanish, and access to Friends of the ATA, a patient-oriented service providing access to the latest in thyroid health information.
