Rebecca Bahn, MD, Takes Office as President of the American Thyroid Association Nov. 16, 2007—Rebecca S. Bahn, MD, of Rochester, Minn., is the new president of the American Thyroid Association (ATA), the leading professional society of physicians and researchers who specialize in diseases of the thyroid gland. She will serve a one-year term from 2007 – 2008. Dr. Bahn is a professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and a consultant in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Nutrition at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. She also serves as associate chair of medicine and associate director of research for Career Development at Mayo Clinic. In Dr. Bahn’s candidate statement, she expressed the desire for the ATA “to forge stronger links with other scientific disciplines and organizations. Input from these groups will facilitate the translation of scientific discoveries into effective therapies for patients with thyroid disease.” Dr. Bahn received her medical degree from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, as well as completed her internal medicine residency, fellowship training in endocrinology, and a National Institutes of Health (NIH)–sponsored research training fellowship there. An active member of the ATA, Dr. Bahn serves on the editorial board of the ATA’s journal, Thyroid, was the editor of the ATA member newsletter, Signal, an associate editor of Endocrinology, and served for four years on the ATA’s board of directors. She was the basic science chair of the ATA Program Committee for the 2003 Annual Meeting and a member of the Program Committee for the 12th International Thyroid Congress in Kyoto, Japan. Dr. Bahn has served on the ATA Nominating, Education, and Membership Committees and is actively involved in the ATA’s Women in Thyroidology network. She also served as chair of the Thyroid Research Advisory Council and was a regular member of the NIH Endocrinology Study Section from 1998–2002. Dr. Bahn’s research efforts are devoted to the study of Graves’ disease and thyroid ophthalmopathy, and her clinical practice is focused primarily on the treatment of patients with these conditions.
