Richard Kloos, MD, Takes Office as Secretary/Chief Operating Officer of the American Thyroid Association

Nov. 16, 2007— Richard Kloos, MD, of Columbus, Ohio, is the new secretary/chief operating officer of the American Thyroid Association (ATA), the leading professional society of physicians and researchers who specialize in diseases of the thyroid gland. He will serve a four-year term from 2007–2011.

He is associate professor for the Divisions of Endocrinology and Metabolism and Nuclear Medicine at The Ohio State University (OSU) and the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital in Columbus. He is co-director of The OSU Thyroid Cancer Unit.

“Through growth and leadership in research, patient care, advocacy, and education, the ATA is positioned to expand its outstanding reputation and name recognition worldwide,” said Dr. Kloos in his candidate statement. “Through these efforts, the ATA can influence the well-being of countless people through both broad population healthcare initiatives, fundamental research, as well as through individual personal interactions—one patient at a time.”

An active member of the ATA, he has served on the ATA Guidelines Task Force for thyroid nodules and differentiated thyroid cancer since 2004, the Clinical Affairs Committee since 2005, and as chair of the ATA Guidelines Task Force for medullary thyroid cancer since 2006.

Dr. Kloos has been a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines committee for thyroid carcinoma since 1998 and is a reviewer for multiple journals, including the ATA journal, Thyroid. He is also a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

A graduate of the University of Chicago with honors, Dr. Kloos received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine training at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, with emphasis in international health. His postdoctoral training continued at the University of Michigan in the Divisions of Endocrinology and Metabolism and Nuclear Medicine.
