Sheue-yann Cheng, PhD, Awarded
American Thyroid Association's
Sidney H. Ingbar Distinguished Lectureship

(FALLS CHURCH, VA)—Sheue-yann Cheng, PhD, of Bethesda, Md., is the recipient of the American Thyroid Association's (ATA) 2003 Sidney H. Ingbar Distinguished Lectureship. Dr. Cheng presented her award lecture, "Thyroid Hormone Receptor Mutants: Molecular Actions and Role in Disease," on Sept. 18 at the ATA's 75th Annual Meeting in Palm Beach, Fla.

The Ingbar award recognizes outstanding academic achievements in thyroidology, in keeping with the innovation and vision that epitomized Dr. Ingbar's brilliant investigative career. The Ingbar award is conferred upon an established investigator who has made major contributions to thyroid-related research over many years. The award is endowed by donations made in memory of Dr. Ingbar and is supported by Abbott Laboratories.

Dr. Cheng received her PhD from the University of California San Francisco Medical Center. After working as a postdoctoral fellow with Drs. Hans Cahnmann and Jacob Robbins at the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases, she joined the Laboratory of Molecular Biology at the National Cancer Institute as a senior investigator in 1979 and was appointed chief of the Gene Regulation Section in 1991. Her recent work is focused on the use of knock-out and knock-in mouse models to delineate the mechanisms of in vivo functions of thyroid hormone receptors and to understand the molecular basis of human diseases due to mutations of thyroid hormone receptors.

Dr. Cheng currently serves as a director on the ATA Executive Council and as a member of the Annual Meeting Steering Committee of The Endocrine Society.

The American Thyroid Association, www.thyroid.org, is the North American professional society for physicians and researchers specializing in diseases of the thyroid gland. The ATA promotes excellence and innovation in clinical care, research, education, and public advocacy.
