Sandra McLachlan, PhD, Awarded
American Thyroid Association’s
Sidney H. Ingbar Distinguished Lectureship

(FALLS CHURCH, VA)—Sandra M. McLachlan, PhD, of Los Angeles, is the recipient of the American Thyroid Association’s (ATA) 2004 Sidney H. Ingbar Distinguished Lectureship. Dr. McLachlan presented her lecture, “An Odyssey in Thyroid Autoimmunity,” on Sept. 30, 2004, at the ATA 76th Annual Meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

The Ingbar award recognizes outstanding academic achievements in thyroidology, in keeping with the innovation and vision that epitomized Dr. Ingbar’s brilliant investigative career. The Inbar award is conferred upon an established investigator who has made major contributions to thyroid-related research over many years. The award is endowed by donations made in memory of Dr. Ingbar and is supported in part by an unrestricted educational grant from Abbott Laboratories.

Dr. McLachlan is Co-Director of the Autoimmune Disease Unit in the Cedars-Sinai Research Institute and a Professor of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles.. The focus of her research is to elucidate the molecular and cellular interactions leading to the generation of thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor autoantibodies in Graves’ disease and autoimmune responses to thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin in Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. In her lecture, she highlighted the insights gained from structural studies of the thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor for understanding the immune processes leading to Graves’ disease.

A member of the ATA since 1985, Dr. McLachlan is a Director on the Executive Council and is the Council liaison on the Research Committee, of which she previously served as chair. In addition, she is an editorial board member of the ATA journal, Thyroid, and has also served on the ATA Program Committee.

The American Thyroid Association, www.thyroid.org, is the North American professional society for physicians and researchers specializing in diseases of the thyroid gland. The ATA promotes excellence and innovation in clinical care, research, education, and public advocacy.
