Paul Walfish, MD, Receives
American Thyroid Association’s Paul Starr Award
(FALLS CHURCH, VA)—Paul G. Walfish, MD, of Toronto, Canada, is the recipient of the American Thyroid Association’s (ATA) 2004 Paul Starr Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to clinical thyroidology. As part of this prestigious award, he presented a major lecture, “Evolving Strategies in the Detection and Management of Thyroid Carcinoma: Past and Future Perspectives,” on Oct. 2, 2004, during the ATA’s 76th Annual Meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada., where he also received the award.
The award is supported by ATA member Boris Catz, MD, and in part by an unrestricted educational grant from Monarch/King Pharmaceuticals.
Dr. Walfish is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Medicine, Pediatrics and Otolaryngology at the University of Toronto and a Senior Consultant in the Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism and the Head & Neck Oncology Program of Mount Sinai Hospital.
Dr. Walfish has made numerous contributions to improve the clinical management of many thyroid disorders, including the early detection and treatment of congenital hypothyroidism by newborn screening, the application of ultrasound and fine-needle biopsy in the detection and management of thyroid cancer, and the recognition of the post-partum thyroiditis syndrome and its underlying autoimmune etiology.
Dr. Walfish has received many prestigious honors and awards, including an appointment as a Member of the Order of Canada — the highest honor granted to a Canadian citizen — in 1990 and the March of Dimes/Aventis Pasteur - 2001 Jonas Salk Prize for his pioneering efforts in the prevention of the neurologic complications of congenital hypothyroidism. He also received a distinguished public service Civic Award from the city of Toronto in 1983 and the first Council Award from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario in 1998.
Dr. Walfish has contributed many publications and book chapters to the world literature on the diagnosis and management of thyroid disorders. He is a past member of the Editorial Board for the ATA journal, Thyroid, and has been an active ATA member since 1972.
Dr. Walfish received his medical degree from the University of Toronto School of Medicine, where he also underwent training in Endocrinology and Internal Medicine, to obtain a Fellowship (FRCP)C from the Royal College of Physicians of Canada. After an R.S. McLaughlin Traveling Fellowship at the Thyroid and Endocrine Units of the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard School of Medicine, he returned to Toronto in 1964 as a Scholar of the Medical Research Council of Canada and has been, to date, a full-time physician and scientist at Mount Sinai Hospital and the University of Toronto.
