President's Update
Robert C. Smallridge, M.D.
ATA President

Dear ATA Colleagues,

Many of you attended the recent Endocrine Society annual meeting in San Diego and are aware of the recognition bestowed upon several ATA members. For those of you unable to attend, I am pleased to report that three of our ATA colleagues were Endocrine Society 2015 Laureate Awards recipients:

Susan A. Sherman, MDOutstanding Clinical Practitioner Award. Dr. Sherman was recognized for "extraordinary contributions by a practicing endocrinologist to the endocrine and/or medical community. Dedicated to patient care, Dr. Sherman has run a solo and highly respected private practice for more than 35 years and accepted patients from all socio-economic groups". She has been a member of the ATA since 1996 and currently serves on the ATA Board of Directors.

Valeria Guimaraes, FACE, MD, PhD – Outstanding Public Service Award. Dr. Guimaraes was recognized as "the individual who best demonstrates dedication to public awareness or public service in support of the field of endocrinology and the patients who suffer from endocrine disorders. Dr. Guimaraes has developed, led and contributed to local and national public awareness campaigns tackling topics such as childhood obesity, thyroid disease awareness and early detection of thyroid cancer". She has been a member of the ATA since 1995, has served on the ATA patient education committee and is currently president of the Brazilian Endocrine Society.

Douglas S. Ross, MS, MD – Outstanding Scholarly Physician Award. Dr. Ross was recognized for "outstanding contributions to the practice of clinical endocrinology in academic settings...A frequent speaker at the Society's annual meeting and American Thyroid Association meetings, Dr. Ross has served three terms on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism and currently serves on the editorial board of Thyroid". He has been an ATA member since 1983 and is currently chair of the Hyperthyroidism guidelines task force.

Like The Endocrine Society, the ATA has a long history of acknowledging deserving members, and all of you are encouraged to recommend colleagues to our Awards Committee for consideration. Nominations are invited for the Van Meter Award Lecture, The Distinguished Service Award (DSA), and the John B. Stanbury Thyroid Pathophysiology Medal. In addition, nominations are invited for the ATA Board of Directors.

I would remind you that the 15th International Thyroid Congress (ITC) is fast approaching, and Early Bird Registration will be open from April until June 30. You won't want to miss this stellar event. The last ITC in North America was 20 years ago (Toronto), and the last one in the United States was 40 years ago! This year's event may indeed be a once in a career opportunity to attend an ATA hosted event within the USA.

I look forward to seeing you this coming October in Florida at the Walt Disney Swan and Dolphin!

Best wishes,
Bob Smallridge, M.D.
