Introduction and Role of Editor-in-Chief of Thyroid®

The ATA seeks applications for the next Editor-in-Chief of Thyroid®, the flagship journal, which just celebrated its 35thanniversary. Thyroid® is the leading, peer-reviewed resource for original articles, patient-focused reports, and translational research on thyroid cancer and all thyroid-related diseases. The journal delivers the latest findings on topics from primary care to clinical application and is the exclusive source for the authoritative and updated American Thyroid Association® (ATA) Guidelines for Managing Thyroid Disease. Thyroid® has a five-year impact factor of 6.5 placing it in the top quartile of journals in the Endocrinology and Metabolism category.

ATA seeks a visionary leader with an established track record in academic and scholarly publishing. The successful applicant will have:

  • Clinical and scientific expertise in thyroid disease and pathophysiology, ideally with an active research portfolio.
  • Prior editorial experience as an Associate Editor, Deputy Editor, or Editorial Board member of Thyroid® or another recognized peer-reviewed journal.
  • Demonstrated impartiality and balanced representation of content.
  • Ability to delegate and engage the editorial team.
  • Sound judgment in managing conflicts among authors and reviewers.
  • Appreciation of the field’s multidisciplinary scope (endocrinology, surgery, oncology, nuclear medicine, pathology).
  • Strong professional network, both in the United States and internationally.

Fluency in, or a strong interest in, publication ethics, a clear vision for the journal’s digital/open-access future, and a strong editorial writing voice would further strengthen the applicant’s profile.

    Job Description

    The EiC is responsible for providing leadership and vision with the goal of continuing to improve the quality of Thyroid®, and to oversee its development and progression as the leading journal of its field. The EiC is supported by the Editorial Board, a strong team of Associate Editors and a virtual editorial support staff.

    Thyroid® received 785 manuscript submissions in 2025. The journal has an overall acceptance rate of 19% and 33% of submissions are rejected without external review. The time to first decision is 40 days, from submission to publication is 138 days, and from acceptance to published is 20 days.

    The Editor-in-Chief will consider all submissions, conduct initial triage, assign to the appropriate specialty or editor, as well as meet as needed with AEs to discuss selections for peer review, content development, commissioning, and solicitation.

    Specific Responsibilities

    • To ensure that the Journal meets the needs of the thyroid community and the American Thyroid Association®
    • To oversee the acceptance or rejection of manuscripts, and to solicit new submissions where appropriate
    • To provide leadership in the interaction of the journal with its publisher
    • To oversee the editing responsibilities required for the Journal to be published in a timely manner
    • To maintain the quality, confidentiality and integrity of the review process
    • To select Deputy Editor(s), Associate Editors and Editorial Board members with balanced representation of expertise, specialty, gender, geography and ethnicity
    • To observe the annual budget as approved by the ATA Board of Directors
    • To follow established procedures for investigating alleged misconduct at all levels
    • To attend ATA Publications Committee and Annual meetings
    • To report to the Board of Directors of the ATA

    Editorial Responsibilities

    The EiC, upon the advice of the Editorial Board, shall have complete and final authority for the selection, editorial modification and quality of all materials published. The specific responsibilities of the EiC shall include:

    • Establishing the Editorial Board for the journal (Associate Editors and Editorial Board Members), consisting of distinguished international researchers, scientists, and practitioners across the field. The EiC will demonstrate commitment to the principles of diversity, inclusion, access, and equity in terms of editorial and reviewer recruitment and author relations.
    • Working with the ATA and the publisher to develop strategies for editorial development of Thyroid®, including deploying electronic features available through the publisher’s journal website, developing plans and strategies to attract the most impactful papers to enhance the journal’s Impact Factor and attending strategy and planning meetings arranged by the ATA or the publisher.
    • Engaging the Editorial Board in discussing continuous improvement and development of the journal and facilitating their understanding of criteria for selecting papers and expanding coverage in new areas.
    • Arranging appropriate, timely and efficient peer-review procedures for the contributions submitted for publication in the journal and utilizing the manuscript tracking system provided by the publisher.
    • Preparing, in conjunction with the Publisher, semi-annual reports to the ATA Publications Committee and Board of Directors, showing the acceptance rate, rate of submission, origin of submitted and accepted papers, time lag to first decision and final decision and other statistics that will indicate the health of the journal.
    • Ensuring that his or her conduct conforms to the highest standards of professional conduct and scientific integrity, including strict adherence to the ATA conflict of interest policies, and to the principles of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE); is consistent with all applicable laws, regulations and publication standards and reflects positively on ATA; and promotes the same standards of conduct by the Associate Editors and other members of the editorial team.
    • Securing from all members of the Editorial Board conflict of interest disclosures and submitting his or her own conflict of interest statement annually to the ATA Executive Director and securing from all authors appropriate conflict of interest disclosures.
    • Assure the editorial freedom of the content of the journal.

    Time Commitment

    The role of the EiC of Thyroid® is substantial and may suit a candidate with flexible time commitments. A stipend will be provided. The ATA leadership is open to negotiation in terms of the exact nature of required support and consideration of the selection of a Deputy Editor (DE) and the assignment of duties for the DE.

    Term

    The EiC will serve a single one-time term of three (3) years, commencing January 1, 2027, and ending December 31, 2029, with an automatic renewal for an additional 2-year term.
