Susan J Mandel, MD MPH

Susan J Mandel, MD MPH, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. 

Dr. Mandel is a Professor of Medicine and Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, where she also directs the fellowship program in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism. She serves as the Associate Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and is the Director of the Thyroid Nodule Clinic. She attended medical school at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University and completed her medical residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City. After finishing a fellowship in endocrinology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, she was a faculty member at the Brigham prior to moving to the University of Pennsylvania in 1997. Her research interests include the use of sonography in the evaluation of patients with thyroid nodules, the novel introduction of I-123 imaging in differentiated thyroid cancer, and thyroid disease during pregnancy. She has lectured both throughout the United States as well as internationally on these topics. She served as President of the Endocrine Society 2018-19 and is currently the Immediate Past President. She is also a past President of the Association of Program Directors in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism and a member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) where she serves on the Thyroid Scientific Committee.

Dr. Mandel has been a member of the ATA since 1991 and has served on various committees, including the Nominating Committee (Chair) and Laboratory Affairs Committee and she has participated in both the first and most recent ATA Strategic Planning workgroups. Dr. Mandel Co-Chaired the 2009 Annual Meeting Program Committee and is a member of the Program Committee for the 2020 International Thyroid Congress in Xi’an China.  In addition, she has been the ATA representative for the American College of Radiology’s Appropriateness Criteria for Thyroid Imaging.    Dr. Mandel has served on the writing groups for all three versions of the ATA Management Guidelines for Patients with Thyroid Nodules and Differentiated Thyroid Cancer and both the Endocrine Society’s and ATA’s Guidelines for the Management of Thyroid Disease During Pregnancy.  She is currently co-chairing the most current revision of the ATA Guidelines for Patients with Thyroid Nodules.  Dr. Mandel initiated and directs the ATA Advanced Ultrasound Workshop.

Dr. Mandel has won prestigious awards for her education and clinical research accomplishments including the 2011 Endocrine Society’s laureate Distinguished Educator Award, the 2012 AACE H. Jack Baskin Educator, and the George Murray Lectureship Award from the British Thyroid Association.  She has authored papers in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Annals of Internal Medicine, and JAMA, as well as publications in endocrine and radiology journals and chapters in leading textbooks.
