Sad Announcements of the passing of ATA members:

2020

James Haddow, MD, passed away on June 13, 2020, at the age of 85. Dr. Monaco was a member of the ATA for 12 year and practiced at the Institute for Preventive Medicine in Windham, ME.

2019

Fabrizio Monaco, MD, passed away on July 13, 2019, at the age of 77. Dr. Monaco was a member of the ATA for 45 year and practiced in Rome, Italy.

 

Richard B. Schnute, MD, passed away on June 6, 2019, at the age of 92. Dr. Schnute was a member of the ATA for 49 year and practiced at Indiana University Medical Center for over 50 years.

 

Lewis E. Braverman, MD, The ATA is saddened to report the death of Lewis E. Braverman, MD. He was an undergraduate at Harvard College and graduated from medical school at Johns Hopkins University in 1955, followed by an Internal Medicine Residency at Boston City Hospital and an Endocrinology Fellowship under the direction of Sidney H. Ingbar, MD in the Thorndike Memorial Laboratory. He was a longtime thyroid clinician, beloved by his patients, many of whom followed him as he moved to various institutions during his career. He retired from clinical practice in 2018 at the age of 88.

Lewis E. Braverman, MD

2018

Dr. Leslie J. De Groot, a 60 year member of the ATA and past president, died on Tuesday, October 23, 2018. Dr. De Groot joined the ATA in 1958 at the age of 30 and contributed to many committees and important projects over the years. He was president in 1982, received the ATA Distinguished Service Award in 1991, and the Distinguished Prize Lectureship in 1993.

Robert Lloyd Segal, M.D. 1925-2018 Dr. Robert L. Segal joined the ATA in 1978 and served on the history and archives committee from 2005-2009. He attended the ATA annual meeting regularly. Born October 1925 in Brooklyn and raised in Larchmont, Dr. Segal died August 2nd at age 92. After attending Swarthmore, he received his medical degree from the University of Buffalo. Admirably served his country as a physician in the Navy during World War II. An internist at Mount Sinai Medical Center, from 1947 until his retirement at age 84. Founding member of the Department of Endocrinology. He both loved taking care of his patients and studying thyroid disease.

 

Dr. Paul G. Walfish The ATA expresses sad news that Dr. Paul Walfish, ATA member since 1971, passed away on Saturday, July 28 at the Mt. Sinai Hospital in Toronto, at the age of 83. Dr. Walfish was the recipient of ATA distinguished awards: the Sidney H. Ingbar lectureship in 2007, the Paul Starr lectureship in 2004, the Stanbury Pathophysiology Medal in 2009. He served and chaired on many committees over his 47 years in the ATA. Our condolences to his wife, Sandy, who attended virtually every ATA annual meeting with Paul.

 

Theo J. Visser, PhD
The American Thyroid Association has received very sad news of the passing on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 of long time Corresponding member, Professor Theo J. Visser, Erasmus University Medical Center.

Professor Visser, an ATA member since 1976, was 68 years of age. He is described by colleagues as “a mentor, a brilliant scientist, and also a great person and friend, Theo has been a great inspiration for many people.”

 

Dr. Isadore Rosenberg passed away on February 2, at nearly 99 years of age.  He had been a member of the ATA since 1961.  He was a professor in the endocrine division at Boston University and served as Chief of Medicine at Framingham Union Hospital.

2017

Prof. Gabriella Morreale de Escobar, Madrid, Spain, has passed away on December 4, 2017.

 

James C. Sisson, MD, an ATA member since 1965, has passed away on October 5, 2017, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

 

Elias C. Dow, M.D.

Dr. Elias C. Dow of Brookline, passed away on Monday, April 17, 2017 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, at the age of 89. Dr. Dow was a dedicated member of the American Thyroid Association since 1966 and led the Development efforts as chair of the committee for many years.

 

2016

Frank Greenspan, M.D.

Dr. Francis (Frank) Greenspan, University of California San Francisco Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Radiology, died peacefully at his home in Alameda on October 13, 2016 at the age of 96. He was chief of the UCSF Thyroid Clinic from 1959 until his retirement in 2010. Generations of endocrine fellows learned their thyroidology skills from him. Dr. Greenspan received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Thyroid Association in 1997 and served as ATA Treasurer 1983-1988.

 

Marvin Mitchell, M.D.

Dr. Marvin Mitchell died on September 30, 2016 at the age of 94. He was a national authority on the use of radioisotopes for testing and diagnosis. He established a pioneering program in 1976 to test newborns for hypothyroidism at the Massachusetts State Laboratory Institute. Dr. Mitchell was an ATA member since 1976 and served on the Public Health Committee.

 

Shigenobu Nagataki, M.D.

Emeritus Professor Shigenobu Nagataki passed away on November 12, 2016 in Tokyo, Japan, at 84 years of age. His postgraduate work with Dr. Sidney H. Ingbar at the Thorndike Laboratory and Harvard Unit at Boston City Hospital focused on iodine metabolism in health and disease and the utility of radioisotopes in the study of overall thyroidal economy and pathophysiology. Professor Nagataki was a member of the American Thyroid Association since 1969 and a founding member of Asia & Oceania Thyroid Association (AOTA).

 

Peter Laurberg, MD

The ATA is shocked and saddened to report that on June 20, 2016 Dr. Peter Laurberg died following being struck by a car in Tbilisi, Georgia. Dr. Laurberg was a leader in the field of thyroidology and was serving on two ATA guidelines task forces for hyperthyroidism and thyroid and pregnancy. Dr. Laurberg was a Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, Aalborg University Hospital, Aalborg, Denmark, and served on the Board of Directors, International Council for Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders. He was an Honorary Professor, China Medical University, Shenyang, China and President of the European Thyroid Association from 2008-11.

 

Mario Andreoli, M.D.

Dr. Mario Andreoli, Professor Emeritus of Endocrinology, University of Rome la Sapienza, passed away the morning of May 9, 2016. Born August 27, 1929 and a member of the ATA since 1962, and a member of The Italian Society of Endocrinology. His daughter, Valeria Andreoli, noted that her father was proud and honoured to be an ATA member.

2014

E. Chester Ridgway, MD
January 18, 1942 – July 31, 2014

It is with tremendous sadness and great sense of loss that we have to inform you about the passing of our leader, mentor and friend, Chip Ridgway, earlier this morning, July 31. Chip was at home with his family. He passed away in peace.

This is a tremendous loss for our field, the ATA, and each of us as individuals who knew Chip.

 

Offie P. Soldin, PhD, a member of the ATA since 2002 has died on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at the age of 62. She was an associate professor in the Departments of Oncology, Medicine, Physiology and Obstetrics and Gynecology at Lombardi Georgetown Cancer Center. She served as chair of the ATA Laboratory Services Committee from 2009–2012 and on the THYROID journal editorial board.

 

In memoriam James A. Pittman, MD, a member of the ATA since 1956 has died on January 12, 2014 at the age of 86. He was predeceased by his wife, an ATA member and past president, Constance Pittman, MD.

2013

In memoriam Dr. Gerard N. Burrow passed away on Saturday, December 14, 2013. A member since 1968, he served as ATA president in 1986-87 and received the ATA’s Distinguished Service Award in 1993 in recognition for his many contributions as a leader in the ATA.

 

Paul S. Kim, MD, a member of the ATA from 1991 – 2009 died on October 25, 2013. He was Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

 

In memoriam Dr. Ernest Mazzaferri, Sr., passed away on May 14, 2013. He was a former ATA president, Paul Starr Awardee, Thyroid Cancer pioneer and valued colleague.

 

In memoriam Dr. Boris Catz, died on Thursday morning, May 2, 2013. An Active member of the ATA since 1954, he received the Distinguished Service Award in 2001 and supported the Paul Starr Lectureship Award. He celebrated his 90th birthday in February and recently moved his private practice to his home office.

 

2012

Dr. Alfred E. Leiser, a member of the ATA since 1959, died Wednesday, December 26, 2012 in Houston, Texas, of natural causes at 90 years of age.

 

In memoriam Professor Jim Stockigt, an ATA member since 1980, has passed away on December 1, 2013 at the age of 73. A professor of medicine, he was a past-president of the Endocrine Society of Australia.

 

In memoriam Professor Aldo Pinchera passed away on the 11th of October 2012 at the age of 78. Italian Endocrinology lost a great mentor, one of the founders of Endocrinology in Italy and one of its greatest ambassadors in the world.
